What: CLE:DARWIN AND THE DESCENT OF MAN
The idea that humans have an evolutionary history predates Darwin, although it was Darwin’s ideas that provided the
most compelling evidence that all species – including humans – have evolved. Yet Darwin disagreed with his fellow naturalists over just how humans evolve, proposing an innovative hypothesis in his 1871 book The Descent of Man.
This presentation will trace the history of ideas about human origins by considering Darwin’s hypothesis for how
humans and human diversity evolved and other theories of human origins. We’ll consider advances in the
understanding of human evolution in the 20th century. Lastly, we’ll ponder the future: do humans continue to
evolve? In what ways, and how?
