What: CLE: DIGGING IN THE DIRT
If you have ever wanted to dig in the dirt and search for artifacts, hoping to uncover a piece of history, this is your chance. Dr. Jane Eastman is taking a group of Western Carolina University students to Spikebuck Mound in Hayesville and has offered a few spaces to CLE. The excavations will focus on a small Cherokee settlement dating from the 1200s. Participants will join this group for two days to assist with the documentation, excavation, and processing of archaeological evidence from the site. Field equipment will be provided, but participants should bring their own work gloves, sunscreen, and bug repellent. Close-toed shoes are required. This is a powerpoint presentation with handouts, so there is no need to bring your computer. The Southern Highlands Reserve is a private native plant garden and research center dedicated to the preservation, cultivation and display of plants native to the Southern Appalachian Highlands. The Reserve is open to academic and horticulture professionals on an invitation only basis and is graciously offering this special session to the Center for Life Enrichment. Located at an elevation of 4500 ft, the Reserve is divided into two distinct areas, the Core Park and the Natural Woodlands. The Core Park is home to destination gardens such as The Wildflower Labyrinth and Vaseyi Pond and is surrounded by 100 acres of natural woodland that features waterfall and cliff communities. His Life and Works The course will examine aspects of one of America’s most important, talented and exasperating authors. We will begin with a short story collection of some of Hemingway’s earliest work, The Nick Adams Stories, move to arguably his best novel, A Farewell to Arms, proceed to the middle of his career with the experimental (not entirely successful) To Have and Have Not, and finish with what many regard to be his summative masterpiece, The Old Man and the Sea. An activist freethinker, agnostic and secular humanist will argue that down through the ages the effects of organized religion on humankind have been mainly negative. Among the specific issues to be discussed: religion’s struggle against the advance of science and rational thought; religion’s major role in fomenting wars, slavery, torture and the subjugation of women, children, foreigners and non-believers; religion’s attempts to control to its own ends government, the law, commerce, social institutions and the arts. How to Actually do Something with Those Pictures! This is a repeat of last year’s popular class. Learn how to download your pictures from your digital camera to your computer, organize them so you can find them, and copy them to other devices to they can be printed. We will use software that comes on most computers to edit and print pictures. We will learn how to attach pictures to email messages. (Please have your email address and password ready!) Bring a camera and a card reader with USB connectivity or USB cord for downloading pictures. If you cannot bring a camera, we will have pictures to work with in class. (Computer Basics 101 or comparable knowledge of computer use is prerequisite).

Bull’s Eye of American Strategic Interests Drawing on experiences gained from a recent trip to the Persian Gulf, Sandra Mackey will define the current parameters of American security that lie in and around the area. She will explain the importance of the Gulf’s resources and geographic location as well as the division between the Gulf’s Arab side and its Iranian side. Placing the Gulf on the map of Central Command responsibilities within the U.S. Army, she will explore the relationship of Afghanistan to the Gulf.

Drawing is a learned skill and anyone can do it. With a minimum of supplies you can record your travels visually, represent the things which matter in your environment and have a lifelong relaxing hobby. Drawing is a necessary prerequisite to painting and other art classes. In this class you will learn about contour, negative space, perspective and use of value to create dimension and depth.

What your dog heard is not what you think you said. People psychologist and dog behavior expert, Dr. Heide Coppotelli, along with some of her four-footed friends, presents her third class for CLE. Her intent is to help people understand why their dog doesn’t stop jumping, pulling, chewing, and barking when we try so hard to teach them manners. Coppotelli will cover differences of perception, leadership, affection and solitude between dogs and their human owners. Your dog will be impressed with your new understanding when you come home!
